In the world of web security, speed and automation are your best allies. At Monarx, Active Protection Mode is the engine that transforms our security agent from a passive observer into a proactive guardian.

What is Active Protection Mode?

Active Protection is a specific setting within our on-disk antivirus engine. When enabled, it allows the Monarx agent to automatically remediate all malware found on the server in real-time. Instead of simply flagging a threat for you to review later, the agent acts immediately according to your predefined settings for Malicious and Compromised files.

How it Handles Malicious Files ๐Ÿฆ

When the agent identifies a purely malicious file (one that has no legitimate purpose on your server), you have the flexibility to choose how it is handled:

  • Automatic Deletion: Many customers set the agent to permanently delete malicious files to ensure they can never be executed (this is our default).
    โ€‹

  • Quarantine: Other users prefer to move these files to a dedicated quarantine folder on the same server for later inspection.

๐Ÿ’ก To learn how to set up custom quarantine folders for your specific environment, check out our Advanced Agent Configuration guide.

๐Ÿ“” Note on our Preferred Configuration By default (and as a best practice) we recommend not using an on-disk quarantine folder. Because Monarx is cloud-integrated, we can restore malicious files directly from our cloud infrastructure if a restoration is ever required. This keeps your server cleaner and reduces disk usage.

Auto-Remediation for Compromised Files

Unlike purely malicious files, Compromised (or Injected) files are legitimate system or website files that have had malicious code added to them.

When Active Protection is on, our engine performs auto-remediation. It surgically removes only the foreign/malicious content, leaving the original, clean code intact. This ensures the website continues to function without downtime. As an extra safety net, we also maintain a backup of these files in our cloud.

Flexibility for Hosting Partners

Active Protection Mode isn't just a global "on/off" switch. It can be configured at two distinct levels:

  • Server-Level: Apply a uniform security posture across the entire machine.

  • User-Level: Apply protection to specific accounts or subscriptions.

This granular control provides a significant up-sell opportunity for our hosting partners. You can offer Active Protection as a premium security add-on, allowing your customers to choose the level of automated safety that fits their budget and needs.
